Although we have money in circulation that has no expiry date because it is issued for an indefinite period, there are situations in which the Polish currency becomes invalid. This is primarily about damaged and damaged money that loses its validity and, in some cases, also its value. See what is worth knowing about exchanging money in 2024.

There are two types of banknotes in circulation in our country. The first of them were introduced on January 1, 1995. Nineteen years later, from April 7, 2014, banknotes with a refreshed graphic design are also in circulation. Both versions of the banknotes are valid means of payment, provided they have not been damaged. Damaged money ceases to be legal tender and must be replaced immediately.

Not everyone realizes that damaged money ceases to be a valid means of payment, and sometimes they also lose their value. However, it is worth knowing that we have the right to refuse to accept a damaged banknote in a store, just as a seller has the right to refuse to accept it from us. The current holder is obliged to replace the banknote.

The rules for the exchange of worn or damaged banknotes and coins are regulated by Order No. 31/2013 of the President of the National Bank of Poland of December 17, 2013, on detailed rules and procedures for the exchange of banknotes and coins which, due to wear or damage, cease to be legal tender in the territory of the Republic of Poland.
