Robert Lewandowski (37) broke a historic mark in the Champions League last week. After Neymar, Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo, the Polish star striker also managed to score 20 goals for two different clubs in European club competition. And yet: the time of the experienced snapper for the Catalans is coming to an end.
The 163-time international’s contract expires this summer. Overall, “Lewa” has appeared in almost half of all competitive games for Barça’s starting eleven since his move from Bayern to Barcelona in 2022.
As the ESPN portal reports, club president Joan Laporta and sports director Deco are already looking for a suitable successor at the top. According to sources close to the club, they don’t really agree on who should inherit Lewandowski. While Laporta dreams of a complicated mega-transfer, Deco is apparently looking for cheaper options.
Million dollar poker or a supposed bargain?
Club boss Laporta is said to have expressed interest in Julián Álvarez, who currently plays for Atlético Madrid and is under contract until 2030. However, the league rivals are demanding more than 100 million euros as a transfer fee for the Argentine. In addition, Premier League leader Arsenal is also pursuing the Atléti striker, which shouldn’t exactly depress the price.
Sports director Deco has another solution in mind. Her name could be Dusan Vlahovic. The 25-year-old Serb’s contract expires this summer and he would therefore be available for free. However, he is currently recovering from a groin injury, which could make him a tricky signing.
Both strikers were already hot candidates for the Blaugrana. Even before his move to Manchester City, Barça scouts in South America are said to have suggested Álvarez’s signing. Dusan Vlahovic, on the other hand, was already on Barcelona’s shopping list before his move from Fiorentina to Juventus in 2022. Álvarez scored 11 goals in 29 games this season, while Vlahovic had 6 goals in 17 games until his injury.
