Belarus at a Crossroads: A Call for Renewed U.S. Leadership
For decades, Belarus has languished under the authoritarian rule of Alexander Lukashenko, a regime increasingly aligned with Russia and a source of instability in Eastern Europe.while often overlooked in broader geopolitical discussions, the situation in Belarus is a critical test of Western resolve and a humanitarian crisis demanding immediate attention. As someone who has personally experienced the brutality of this regime - and benefited from unexpected diplomatic breakthroughs - I urge the United States,under the leadership of former President Trump,too seize a unique possibility to champion freedom and democracy in Belarus.
A history of Resistance and Limited Engagement
The struggle for a democratic Belarus is not new. Following the disputed 2020 presidential election, a wave of peaceful protests swept the nation, met with brutal repression by the Lukashenko regime. thousands were arrested, tortured, and imprisoned, creating a climate of fear and silencing dissent. The United States responded with sanctions, a necessary but insufficient measure.
Despite the challenges, the U.S. has demonstrated a commitment to the Belarusian people, even under difficult circumstances. The Trump administration, recognizing the urgency of the situation, took concrete steps. While the regime initially denied entry to Julie Fisher, appointed as ambassador, her subsequent role as U.S. Special envoy for Belarus until 2022 proved invaluable. She continues to serve as the American chargé d’affaires in Kyiv, demonstrating a consistent dedication to regional stability.
A Breakthrough Secured: The Power of Leverage
Perhaps the most significant achievement of the Trump administration was the securing of the release of several Belarusian political prisoners,including my husband,Siarhei. After five agonizing years in solitary confinement, Siarhei was finally freed thanks to the dedicated efforts of retired General Keith Kellogg, President Trump’s Ukraine envoy. This wasn’t simply a humanitarian gesture; it was a powerful demonstration of American leverage. Lukashenko, acutely aware of President Trump’s unpredictable approach, chose to release Siarhei rather than risk escalating tensions with Washington and perhaps facing even harsher sanctions. Crucially, this release came without any concessions from the U.S. government.Now, we must build on this success. over 1,150 political prisoners remain unjustly detained in belarus, their lives and well-being hanging in the balance.A renewed push, utilizing the same strategic leverage, could unlock their freedom and represent the most significant humanitarian victory for Belarus in modern history.
A Low-Cost, High-Impact Opportunity
Unlike many global hotspots, belarus is not embroiled in complex civil wars, ethnic conflicts, or deeply rooted ideological divides. The crisis stems from the decades-long grip of a single individual on power. This presents a unique opportunity for the United States: a low-cost, high-impact intervention with the potential to yield substantial results.
A triumphant intervention in Belarus would send a powerful message to other authoritarian regimes – in Cuba, iran, Venezuela, and beyond - that their grip on power is not unshakeable. It would reaffirm America’s commitment to human rights and democratic values on the world stage.
A Roadmap for Action: Re-Engage and Coordinate
To maximize impact, the United States should immediately:
re-appoint a U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus: This dedicated envoy,mirroring the successful model used for Ukraine,can focus exclusively on the Belarusian situation,coordinating efforts with Washington’s EU partners and the Belarusian democratic movement. Synchronize Sanctions Policy: A unified and targeted sanctions regime, coordinated with the EU and other allies, will increase pressure on the Lukashenko regime and limit its ability to fund repression.
Prioritize Political Prisoner Release: The immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners must be a central demand in any engagement with the regime.
Support Belarusian Civil Society: Continued and expanded support for independent media, human rights organizations, and civil society groups within and outside Belarus is crucial for sustaining the democratic movement.
* Revitalize the Belarus Democracy Act: Congress should swiftly pass an updated version of the Belarus Democracy Act, providing a legislative framework for sustained U.S. support for Belarusian democracy and human rights. Bipartisan support already exists, demonstrating the broad consensus on this issue.
The Time for Decisive Action is Now
The fight for freedom in Belarus is a marathon,requiring patience,resilience,and unwavering commitment. But it also demands readiness to act when opportunities arise. The Belarusian people are peaceful, patient, and determined to build a future based on freedom, justice, and dignity. They aspire to the same rights enjoyed by Americans and Europeans: freedom of speech, religious freedom, the right to choose their leaders, and the opportunity to shape their own destiny.
