Hamilton faces Qualifying Disappointment as Ferrari & McLaren Refine Performance at Spa
Lewis Hamilton experienced a frustrating qualifying session at Spa-Francorchamps, exiting Q1 and expressing a need to understand a significant error. He went too wide at the exit of Turn 1, exceeding track limits and having his lap time deleted.
Everyone navigates that kerb, but Hamilton admitted this was the furthest he’d ventured over it. He plans to review the incident with the stewards to gain clarity on what transpired.
Ferrari & McLaren pursue Aerodynamic Gains
This weekend saw Ferrari introduce a new rear suspension design, aiming to optimize aerodynamic performance. The goal is to run the car lower to the ground, generating more downforce without excessive underbody wear. This upgrade also intends to improve the car’s overall drivability and driver feel.
However, initial feedback from Hamilton regarding the changes has been muted. He stated the car felt similar to its previous configuration, despite adjustments made by the team.
McLaren also brought upgrades to Spa, demonstrating the intense competition for performance gains. Oscar Piastri encountered a similar issue to Hamilton during sprint qualifying on friday, but was able to set another timed lap.
Hamilton Expresses Concern Over Development Path
Hamilton voiced his disappointment with the qualifying result, emphasizing the extensive preparation that preceded it. “It’s not acceptable,” he stated, acknowledging the team’s hard work, including a dedicated filming day.
He also indicated a shift in focus towards the 2025 car. While upgrades have been implemented, he believes further development this season will be limited. Current focus is on understanding and addressing the issues with the existing package.
The primary effort will now be directed towards next year’s car design and performance.
Leclerc Optimistic, Verstappen Slightly Off Pace
Charles Leclerc offered a more positive assessment of Ferrari’s upgrades, surprisingly qualifying ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. He finished just behind pole-sitter Lando Norris, with a margin of 0.338 seconds.
Verstappen’s final lap was compromised by a mistake exiting the first corner, placing him just 0.003 seconds behind Leclerc.Leclerc acknowledged the upgrades represent a step in the right direction, though the improvements are subtle. He also noted McLaren’s progress, highlighting the difficulty in closing the performance gap.
“It feels a little bit different and it’s going in the right direction,” Leclerc explained. “But McLaren has also brought a few things this weekend and seems to have done a small step in the right direction as well.”
Rain Looms for the Grand Prix,Limited Setup Changes Possible
Forecasts predict rain during the grand prix, potentially adding another layer of complexity to the race. However, Formula 1 regulations prevent teams from making significant changes to their cars between qualifying and the race.
Hamilton acknowledged the limitations, stating he will start from his qualifying position and maximize what he can. “I don’t think there’s really much we can do so I will just start from where I am and see where I can go from there.”
Ultimately, the Spa weekend is shaping up to be a strategic challenge for all teams, requiring adaptability and precise execution in potentially wet conditions. You can expect a dynamic race as drivers and teams navigate the conditions and strive to capitalize on any opportunities that arise.
