Ben Affleck on Netflix‘s Film⁤ Strategy and the Launch of ⁣Artists Equity

Ben Affleck recently shared candid insights into the challenges of creating content for streaming giants like Netflix, and his vision for a new kind of studio with Artists Equity. He spoke at ‍the 2022 DealBook Conference, offering‌ a perspective shaped by his extensive experience in Hollywood.Affleck acknowledged the‍ talent within Netflix’s film division, specifically praising scott Stuber. ⁤Though, he also suggested the sheer volume of‍ content Netflix aimed to produce ⁢was inherently tough. “Its an unachievable job,” he stated, referring to the task of consistently delivering a ⁤high volume of quality films.

He explained that Netflix ‌co-CEO ‌Reed Hastings himself recognized the ambitious nature of their goal. Hastings reportedly viewed the initial‍ push‍ for quantity as a⁣ necessary step to establish a strong market presence. Affleck, however, questioned the feasibility of producing 50 great movies annually.

“How are we ⁣going to make 50 great‌ movies a year? How is that possible?” he wondered aloud. He believes the scale of such⁤ an undertaking simply exceeds practical limitations, noting there isn’t a committee⁣ large enough, or enough talent available, to consistently achieve that level of quality.

Affleck also touched upon the importance of genre considerations. He understands that action films generally attract a wider audience than smaller dramas. ‌nevertheless, he emphasized the need to prioritize quality and ⁤originality. “Let’s do a good one, let’s surprise‌ the audience, let’s make them care about it,” he urged.

This perspective directly informs his new venture,Artists Equity. It’s being positioned as a creator-led studio designed to redefine the relationship between studios, artists, and the ⁣crews who bring projects to life.

Currently, artists Equity is already in production with its first project. This⁤ film, currently untitled, chronicles the origins of the iconic Air Jordan sneaker. Ben Affleck ‍is directing and writing the script, ⁢with Matt Damon starring as the executive responsible for securing Michael Jordan’s endorsement.

Here’s what you ‍should know about ‌the shift Affleck is advocating for:

Creator Control: Artists equity prioritizes giving creators more agency over their projects.
Quality Over Quantity: ⁤ The focus‌ is on developing fewer, higher-quality films.
* Fair Partnerships: The studio aims to foster more equitable relationships with artists⁤ and crews.

Ultimately, Affleck’s ⁤comments and the launch of Artists equity ⁢signal a desire for a more sustainable and artistically fulfilling model within the film industry. He believes ⁣that by prioritizing quality, collaboration, and creator empowerment, the‌ industry can deliver truly compelling stories that resonate with audiences.
