The path to professional boxing isn’t always paved with privilege or a lifelong dedication to the sport. For one rising lightweight contender, it began with a desire to escape grueling manual labor and a surprising detour into marathon running. this is the story of a fighter who discovered his potential through hard work, a bit of luck, and a commitment to never returning to a life he left behind.
Early Encouragement and Amateur Success
Sharon, alongside her son’s father,John, initially encouraged her boys to explore boxing. This early support proved pivotal as the young athlete quickly excelled at Westree Boxing Club in Maidstone. He soon demonstrated natural talent, culminating in a significant victory: winning the ABAs in April 2019.
A Chance Encounter and a Professional Turn
A month after his ABA win, a fortunate opportunity arose. He was invited to witness Billy Joe Saunders’ WBO super-middleweight title fight with Shefat Isufi in Stevenage. There, he caught the eye of Francis Warren, son of the renowned promoter Frank Warren, who promptly recognized his potential and offered to manage his career.
This offer marked a turning point. He made the decisive choice to abandon a string of physically demanding jobs – including stints in a call center, a fast-food restaurant, and as a roofer – to pursue boxing professionally.
The Motivation Behind the Gloves
“Thinking about those jobs is what keeps me working hard in the gym,” he explains. The memory of those earlier struggles fuels his dedication and prevents complacency. He doesn’t want to revert to a life of monotonous, physically taxing work.
He vividly recalls the challenges of roofing, admitting he was a “fair-weather roofer.” Rain meant a day off, a luxury unavailable in the boxing ring. “You can’t get out of the ring when it is tough,” he reflects, drawing a clear parallel between the two worlds. “But you can get back in the van when your on a roof and it starts raining.”
Navigating Setbacks and Finding New Strengths
The start of his professional career was promising, with three fights completed before the COVID-19 pandemic brought everything to a halt in 2020. Forced to temporarily pause his boxing dreams,he assisted his brother as a “strapper’s assistant” on the railway,a role involving cutting power to electrical lines.
This meant long hours spent in a van, a stark contrast to the adrenaline of the ring.Though, even this unexpected detour led to a surprising finding.
From Snacks to a Marathon
During those long van rides, he indulged in snacks. one night, after overdoing it, he impulsively decided to run a marathon the next day as a form of penance. What began as a way to burn off excess calories transformed into a testament to his physical and mental fortitude.
He initially planned to run 20 miles, but a friend challenged him to go the full 26.2. Remarkably, he completed the marathon in an notable three hours and 40 minutes. This unexpected feat showcased his unbelievable endurance and discipline, qualities that would undoubtedly benefit his boxing career.
