Berkshire Health Systems Dedicates Fairview Hospital Laboratory to Gene Dellea

Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) has officially renamed the clinical laboratory at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to the Gene Dellea Laboratory. The dedication honors Eugene Dellea, a longtime healthcare executive who served as president of both Fairview Hospital and the former Hillcrest Hospital, as well as a senior leader within the Berkshire Health Systems network for several decades.

The dedication ceremony, held on June 29, marked the completion of a significant renovation project at the facility. According to Berkshire Health Systems, the project was supported by a $1 million gift from anonymous donors, which allowed the hospital to relocate and modernize its clinical laboratory services. The updated space now features enhanced diagnostic technology, improved infrastructure, and a more accessible layout for both patients and staff members.

A Legacy of Healthcare Leadership in the Berkshires

During the ribbon-cutting event, which drew nearly 50 attendees including family, local officials, and hospital staff, speakers highlighted Dellea’s enduring influence on regional healthcare. Darlene Rodowicz, President and CEO of Berkshire Health Systems, noted that the investment serves as a tribute to Dellea’s career while simultaneously upgrading the capacity of a department that handles laboratory services for approximately 30,000 patients annually.

“This meaningful investment honors Gene’s remarkable legacy while strengthening the care Fairview provides to the nearly 30,000 people who rely on its laboratory services each year,” Rodowicz stated during the proceedings. The event featured remarks from several key local figures, including Dr. Alec Belman, Fairview’s chief of staff; Tony Scibelli, BHS vice president and Fairview’s chief operating officer; and Stephen Bannon, who serves as both a Fairview pharmacist and the chair of the Great Barrington Selectboard.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Community Impact

The transition of the clinical laboratory to the Gene Dellea Laboratory represents a broader effort by BHS to maintain modern medical standards in rural healthcare settings. The renovation focused on upgrading diagnostic equipment, which is critical for the timely processing of blood work, pathology, and other essential clinical tests. By moving the laboratory to a more central, accessible location within the hospital, Fairview aims to reduce wait times and improve the overall patient experience.

Berkshire Health Systems Patients Show their Appreciation for our Care

During the ceremony, Stephen Bannon presented Dellea with an official citation acknowledging his lifelong commitment to the health and wellness of Berkshire County residents. For his part, Dellea shared personal reflections on his early years managing the laboratory at Hillcrest Hospital, tracing the evolution of diagnostic medicine through his decades of service at both Hillcrest and Fairview.

The facility’s modernization reflects a growing trend among regional health systems to prioritize capital improvements in diagnostic departments, which serve as the foundation for most clinical decision-making. As Fairview Hospital continues to serve the Great Barrington community, the new laboratory stands as a primary diagnostic hub for the region.

Fairview Hospital continues its standard operations following the laboratory dedication.
