Senator Bernie Sanders has formally called on top Democratic Party leaders to enact an immediate ban on super PAC involvement in party primaries, denouncing what he termed a corrupt campaign finance system that allows outside special interests to flood nominating contests with millions of dollars. According to reporting from Fox News, the Vermont independent shared an August 8 letter addressed to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin, urging them to take proactive steps to alter primary rules.
By focusing specifically on nominating contests, Sanders argued that the Democratic Party possesses the unilateral authority to prohibit super PAC participation in its own primaries without needing to pass new federal legislation first.
The Letter to Leadership and the Call for Party Action
In his communication with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and DNC Chair Ken Martin, Sanders emphasized that while general elections present complex legal hurdles due to existing court rulings, party primaries are entirely within the control of national leadership. According to The Jerusalem Post, Sanders stated that Democrats can take charge of what takes place within their own primaries right now to weed out outside spending.
Sanders pointed directly to the 2010 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission as the foundational source of the current funding landscape, which struck down limits on independent political expenditures. To permanently dismantle this framework, Sanders reiterated his call for Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the ruling and implement a public financing system for elections. However, acknowledging that a constitutional amendment requires a prolonged legislative fight, he stressed that the Democratic Party can institute internal rules to block super PACs from participating in primaries immediately.
“It is absurd that they spend tens of millions of dollars to try to determine who the Democratic nominee is and, if they fail, then proceed to support the Republican candidate in the general election,” Sanders wrote in his statement, as cited by Fox News.
Targeting AIPAC and Record-Breaking Outside Spending
In his critique, Sanders singled out the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, and affiliated organizations for deploying substantial financial resources during party primaries. According to Fox News, Sanders noted that AIPAC and related groups spent more than $30 million in Michigan’s Democratic primary alone in an unsuccessful attempt to defeat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, while pointing out that the group planned to support Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the subsequent general election.
AIPAC maintains that it operates as a bipartisan grassroots organization supporting pro-Israel candidates from both parties through individual citizen donations, while its affiliated super PAC, the United Democracy Project, works to defeat detractors of the U.S.-Israel relationship. Nevertheless, Sanders argued that the involvement of outside groups often works against the broader interests of Democratic voters, especially when special interests pivot to back Republican nominees after failing to secure a victory in the primary.
Beyond political and foreign policy advocacy groups, Sanders highlighted a broader surge in corporate outside spending. According to Fox News and The Jerusalem Post, corporate super PACs representing cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, and online betting interests have already pumped a record $517 million into the current election cycle, shattering the record set in 2024.
