Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes) Shifts Venue: A Look at the Changes and What They Mean for Film Lovers
The Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes), a cornerstone of Karnataka‘s cultural landscape, is preparing for its 17th edition with a significant change: a new venue. departing from its long-held home at Orion Mall, BIFFes 2025 will unfold at Lulu Mall from January 29th to February 6th. This move has sparked discussion amongst regular attendees and industry professionals, raising questions about logistical considerations and the overall festival experience.
This article delves into the reasons behind the venue shift, addresses concerns voiced by key figures in the film community, and outlines the measures being taken to ensure a seamless and enriching experience for all delegates and film enthusiasts. We’ll explore the potential challenges, the solutions proposed, and what attendees can expect from this year’s expanded festival.
A Decade of Tradition Disrupted: Concerns Over the Transition
For over a decade, Orion mall served as more than just a location for BIFFes; it was an integral part of the festival’s infrastructure. Playwright and screenwriter Abhishek Iyengar, co-founder of WeMoveTheatre, highlights the deeply ingrained operational efficiency at Orion. “The staff were specifically trained in film uploading and quality control procedures,” he explains. “Even security personnel were accustomed to managing the unique demands of hosting celebrities and ensuring a smooth flow for attendees.”
Iyengar, who previously served on the organizing committee, emphasizes the importance of established protocols. “Even internationally renowned festivals like Cannes and Busan rarely alter venues due to structural convenience.Re-establishing these protocols – from technical setups to security arrangements – in a new location presents a considerable undertaking.” This sentiment reflects a broader concern that disrupting a well-oiled system could possibly impact the festival’s operational smoothness.
Addressing Logistical Challenges: The Organizers’ Perspective
Murali P.B., Artistic Director of the 17th BIFFes, acknowledges the transition’s complexities but expresses confidence in delivering a successful event. He focuses on accessibility, outlining the public transportation options available to reach Lulu Mall. “The Sujatha Theater stop provides direct bus connectivity,” Murali notes. “While those arriving via the Green Line Metro will need to transfer at Majestic, it’s a single stop to Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Station, just a 500-meter walk from the venue.”
Beyond transportation, organizers are actively addressing other potential concerns. All 11 screens within Lulu Mall will be utilized for film screenings, and a dedicated space on the first floor has been secured for masterclasses. A separate area adjacent to the mall will host press conferences. moreover, attendees can anticipate discounted parking rates and food options within the mall, with a variety of dining choices readily available in the surrounding areas of Bashyam Circle and Magadi Road.
The Delegate Experience: A Call for Prioritization
However, logistical convenience for attendees remains a central point of discussion. Film critic and activist K. Phaniraj stresses the importance of prioritizing the needs of the festival’s core audience – the delegates. “The government must consider the impact on those who regularly attend and contribute to the festival’s vibrancy,” he asserts.
Phaniraj proposes solutions mirroring successful practices at other international film festivals. “Implementing a free bus service running every 15-20 minutes to key drop-off points is crucial. The International Film Festival of India in Goa provides bus services extending up to 30-40 kilometers. Similarly, offering affordable food stalls at the venue, as seen at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in Thiruvananthapuram, would considerably enhance the delegate experience.” He argues that addressing these logistical demands is paramount to ensuring a positive experience despite the venue change.
What’s New at BIFFes 2025: A Celebration of Cinema
Despite the logistical adjustments, BIFFes 2025 promises a compelling program for film lovers. A especially exciting addition is the screening of several meticulously restored versions of classic Dr. Rajkumar films, offering audiences a chance to revisit these cinematic treasures with renewed clarity.
Adding to the excitement, the festival has been extended by a day,now spanning eight days instead of the usual seven. This expanded schedule allows for a more thorough selection of films, increased opportunities for networking, and a deeper immersion into the world of cinema.
The shift in venue for BIFFes 2025 undoubtedly presents challenges. Though, with proactive planning, a focus on accessibility, and a commitment to prioritizing the delegate experience, organizers are striving to ensure that
