Defense Minister United States of America Lloyd Austin announced that the United States government would provide critical air defense and artillery munitions to Ukraine, as part of a military aid package worth US$6 billion (around Rp. 97 trillion). This is the largest aid ever for Ukraine.

The package is the second this week, following another $1 billion package announced just after US President Joe Biden signed a much-delayed bill to provide new funding for war-torn Ukraine. Russia.

“This is the largest security assistance package we have committed to date,” Austin told reporters on Friday (26/4) local time after a virtual meeting of dozens of Kyiv’s international supporters ended.

“They need air defense protection, they need weapons systems and ammunition. They need… armored vehicles, they need maintenance and support. So all of those things are included in this package,” he said as reported by the news agency AFPSaturday (27/4/2024).

Ukraine in recent months has requested more air defense from its Western allies, as it struggles to fend off deadly attacks on civilian infrastructure. The new US package includes efforts for the Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems.

However, unlike the $1 billion aid package announced last Wednesday, which included items to be taken from US stockpiles, this latest aid will come from the defense industry, meaning it will take longer to get to the battlefield.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the US delay in approving new aid was bad for Kyiv.
