Controversy Surrounds US Men’s Hockey Olympic Roster as Stars Snubbed
The stage is set for the men’s Olympic hockey tournament, commencing February 11th in Milan, but the declaration of the US team roster has been met with considerable debate, especially regarding the surprising omissions of two of the league’s top american performers. Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson and Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield were notably left off the team by General Manager Bill Guerin, sparking widespread discussion amongst fans and analysts.
Despite stellar seasons, both players found themselves on the outside looking in. Caufield currently leads all American-born players in goals with 32 in 55 games, punctuated by a two-goal performance against the Buffalo Sabres just days before the roster announcement. Robertson is tied with Jack Eichel for the most points among Americans, boasting an extraordinary 63 points thus far this season.
Guerin addressed the controversial decisions in a post-game interview with Sportsnet, acknowledging the difficulty of the choices. “These guys were close. I know they can play at that level and we easily could have selected them, but we would have had to leave others at home. It’s really hard to make those calls and tell those players they’re not chosen,” he explained.
Adding fuel to the fire, Caufield’s recent performance - including a game where he scored while being watched by guerin himself - highlighted his ability to deliver in crucial moments. He leads the NHL with 18 go-ahead goals and is tied for the lead in game-winning goals with eight, demonstrating a knack for scoring when it matters most.
The decision to include veterans like J.T. Miller and Vincent Trocheck of the New York Rangers, despite less productive seasons (36 points in 42 and 47 games respectively), has further intensified the scrutiny.
Guerin appears to have prioritized continuity, retaining twelve forwards from the 2025 Four Nations tournament roster, with Tage Thompson and Clayton Keller being the only new additions. He emphasized the increased depth of american talent, stating, “There are so many good American players now. Previously, we already knew which players were going to be part of the American team. Now, it’s much more difficult.” He concluded by acknowledging the inevitability of dissatisfaction, stating, “All I know is that my decisions weren’t going to please everyone and I couldn’t have made everyone happy.”
The US team will begin their Olympic journey with a match against Latvia on February 12th, and all eyes will be on their performance as they attempt to justify the contentious roster selections.
