Bios Life, a health technology startup launched by former executives from BioNTech, has emerged from stealth mode with $25 million in seed funding and a multi-year data alliance with Tempus to transform cancer surveillance. The Boston-based company aims to replace traditional, one-off screening methods with continuous, AI-driven risk modeling tailored to high-risk individuals and cancer survivors. According to reporting from Tech Funding News, the funding round was co-led by Redmile, Vsquared Ventures, and Kindred Capital, with participation from health and technology investors across the United States and Europe.
Traditional cancer screening protocols have remained largely unchanged for decades, leading to missed opportunities for early detection. Kevin Oeffinger, director of the Duke Cancer Institute’s Centre for Onco-Primary Care, noted that the vast majority of individuals at elevated risk are not screened according to standard-of-care guidelines, while one in five newly diagnosed cancers in the United States is discovered in existing cancer survivors. Bios Life intends to address these gaps by focusing on more than 40 million Americans who fall into these overlapping, high-risk categories, where over 30% of diagnoses currently occur at advanced stages three or four.
To power its monitoring platform, Bios Life has secured commercial rights to the Nucleotide Transformer, a genomics foundation model created by BioNTech-InstaDeep that can read genetic signals down to a single nucleotide. The startup has also established a multi-year partnership with Tempus, a Chicago-based precision medicine company, to train and test its predictive models using anonymized oncology data. Genetic screening through the platform will be integrated via Ambry Genetics, a Tempus company.
Building Continuous Digital Twins for Patient Care
Rather than relying on periodic, reactive scans, Bios Life creates and continually updates a digital twin for each patient by fusing clinical records, laboratory results, and genetic data. Ryan Richardson, co-founder and chief executive officer of Bios Life and former chief strategy officer at BioNTech, explained the company’s mission. Tens of millions of high-risk individuals and cancer survivors lack access to cutting-edge care tailored to their unique biology, Richardson stated, adding that the startup is building a novel technology portfolio and specialized care delivery model to serve these patients.
Patient care is delivered through a virtual clinic staffed by licensed medical teams working in tandem with traditional cancer centers. For instance, a breast cancer survivor carrying a BRCA gene mutation receives dynamic monitoring that adapts as new lab results or lifestyle factors emerge, rather than waiting fixed intervals for a standard mammogram. The executive team includes Zach Taylor, a former BioNTech senior vice president who serves as chief operating and business officer; Dr. Logan Frank, former head of breast radiology at the University of Missouri, serving as chief medical officer; Geoff Hyde as head of product and engineering; and Dr. Thomas Pierrot as head of AI.
Navigating the Crowded Precision Oncology Market
Bios Life enters a competitive landscape populated by several well-funded digital health companies tackling preventive oncology from different angles. Color Health operates a virtual cancer clinic and collaborates with OpenAI on clinical screening tools. Other notable entrants include Ezra, which secured $21 million in 2024 for full-body MRI-based cancer detection, Neko Health, a preventive scanning startup, and Perci Health, a UK-based platform supporting cancer survivors. While many of these peers focus primarily on diagnostic detection or episodic screening tools, Bios Life combines ongoing predictive risk modeling with continuous patient management into a single virtual care model.
