Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Despite Challenges

In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlighted that renewable energy capacity additions reached record levels in 2023, with solar and wind power leading the charge. The agency’s latest statistics reveal that global renewable energy capacity expanded by last year, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

Wind energy accounted for the largest share of new installations, with of new capacity added globally. Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations also saw substantial growth, contributing to the total expansion.

“The renewable energy transition is accelerating, but we still face significant challenges in grid integration and policy implementation,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “The data shows that while progress is being made, we must do more to ensure a just and equitable transition.”

Regional disparities remain pronounced, with Asia leading the way in renewable energy deployment. China alone accounted for nearly half of the world’s new renewable capacity additions, followed by the European Union and the United States. Africa and Latin America, while growing, still lag behind in terms of overall capacity.

Despite these challenges, IRENA projects that renewable energy could supply of the world’s electricity by 2030 if current trends continue and policy commitments are met. The agency emphasizes the need for increased investment in energy storage and grid modernization to support this transition.

Investment in renewable energy also saw a notable uptick, with global funding exceeding in 2023. This represents a substantial increase from previous years and underscores the growing financial commitment to sustainable energy sources.

Looking ahead, IRENA warns that achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement will require even greater ambition. “We need to double down on our efforts to decarbonize the energy sector,” La Camera stated. “The next decade will be critical in determining whether we can limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”
