We are talking about the ASA system, or rather an automatic gearbox for the GS rangewhich is completely different from the automatic transmissions that are already present on the two-wheel market.

In essence, the gearbox works automatically and the classic clutch lever is absent. However, you can also opt to use the clutch manually. The ASA system, which stands for Automated Shift Assistant, is very different from another system which may seem similar on paper, namely the DCT of the Hondagiven that in the Bavarian company’s project there is no double clutch which is very close to the counterpart used on cars.

Indeed, BMW has focused on operating the clutch and gearbox via actuators which are activated by the control unit. An electric motor, when there is a need to change gear, moves a system of gears to which a sort of small connecting rod is keyed. It is responsible for making the pressure plate move, which causes the clutch to open and close. The system was designed to couple with the brand new 1,300 boxer engine, which has a front clutch. Certainly, this is an exceptional innovation, but in its concept, on the engineering and practical front, it is also quite simple. We’ll see when it arrives on the market in all respects if customers decide to try it right away.
