US planemaker Boeing said it had discovered new problems with the fuselage of its flagship 737 model, which – while not posing an immediate danger in flight – would require a “rework” of dozens of planes.

“Last Thursday, a supplier notified us of a discrepancy in some 737 fuselages,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stan Deal said in a statement to employees that was released to reporters.

According to Deal, an employee working for the supplier “alerted to his supervisor that two holes may not have been drilled exactly to our specifications.”

“While this potential condition does not pose an immediate flight safety issue and all 737s can continue to operate safely, we currently believe we will need to rework approximately 50 undelivered aircraft – an issue that “could delay some deliveries of 737 in the near future”.

Boeing has struggled over the past year with its flagship 737 MAX plane, culminating in a major safety incident on an Alaska Airlines flight in early January that prompted a wide-ranging investigation by the US regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration.
