At least 22 people were killed as a result of two separate explosions that rocked the offices of several election candidates in Pakistan. The explosions, which injured 37 people, occurred a day before Pakistan’s elections, which are usually marred by violence and accusations of fraud, are held on February 8.

As reported AFPWednesday (7/2/2024), the first explosion occurred near the office of an independent candidate in Pishin district, which is about 50 kilometers from the city of Queeta and about 100 kilometers from the Afghan border.

Acting Minister of Information in the region, Jan Achakzai, said that at least 12 people were killed and 25 others were injured as a result of the first explosion in the Pishin district.

He also said that the explosion was triggered by a homemade bomb, with local authorities reporting that the bomb was attached to a motorbike.

“It was an IED (improvised bomb) explosion that resulted in the deaths of 12 people and left more than 25 people injured,” Achakzai said in his statement.

The second blast occurred near the candidate office for the Islamist Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) party in the town of Killa Saifullah, which is 120 kilometers east of Pishin district.

“At least 10 people were killed and 12 others were injured,” said Achakzai AFP.
