Botev Plovdiv and CSKA 1948 finished 0:0 in a match of the 32nd round of the efbet League. The match will be remembered for the canceled goal of Dylan Mertens five minutes before the end due to an ambush, as well as for the serious injury of Antonio Vutov in the 2nd minute. The two teams did not manage to score even a month ago when they met again at the College. After the draw between Slavia and Arda (1:1) in the other match of the group that is fighting for the play-off for the Conference League, Botev Pd and CSKA 1948 have an equal number of points – 45, and have kept chances for the seventh position.

The match started in the most unpleasant way for both teams. A heavy collision in the middle of the field already in the 2nd minute brought the game to a halt for nearly three minutes. James Eto’o and Antonio Vutov collided heads in the air and then were left lying on the grass. The home midfielder’s head was eventually bandaged and he returned to the game, but Vutov’s condition proved more serious and he was carried off on a stretcher. Shortly after that, his place on the field was taken by the teenager Marto Boychev.

In the 12th minute, the spectators saw the first accurate shot of the match, and it was towards Botev’s goal. However, Serduk’s shot did not hinder Hankic. In the counterattack, Dylan Mertens put the visitors’ guard to the test, but he also managed it. Gradually, the “canaries” took the initiative and in the middle of the first half, Konstantinos Baloyianis and Nikolay Minkov failed to find their teammates in the guests’ penalty area after good breakthroughs on both flanks. In the 32nd minute, Emmanuel Ume received a wonderful pass in the penalty area, advanced but shot wide. Christian Nwachukwu had an even better chance 120 seconds later and only the ricochet off the foot of Teodor Ivanov prevented the 18-year-old Nigerian from opening the scoring.

The visitors failed to take the lead in stoppage time of the first half. Radi Kirilov’s shot from the penalty area was blocked by Nikolay Minkov, but the CSKA 1948 captain attempted a second shot, this time being frustrated by goalkeeper Hankic.

The second half started with a more active game of the hosts, whose attacks, however, failed to finish with dangerous shots. Just after an hour of play, Tallis tried to surprise Hankic with a foul, but he was careful and boxed. In the 63rd minute, Jonas Tam headed the ball after a cross from a corner kick, but missed the Reds’ goal. A minute later, Nikolay Minkov shot to the bottom right corner of the goal. The goalkeeper Petar Marinov dived and hooked the ball with the tip of his fingers, but the referee Georgi Ginchev ruled out and angered the bench of the “canaries”.

Botev Pd had another chance to score in the 74th minute when Ukaki crossed low from the right into the box, where Martin Sekulic was expertly pressured by Teodor Invanov and failed to shoot. A minute later Dylan Mertens’ shot was saved by Petar Marinov, and seconds later James Eto’o shot wide.

Five minutes before the end of regular time, Balogiannis crossed from a corner kick to the left of the visitors’ goal. In the penalty area, Ivaylo Videv shot a header, after which the ball ricocheted into the right side post. It passed to Dylan Mertens, who from close range did not miss the addition and scored. However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed due to an ambush by Mertens. When he hit his head, 18-year-old Videv suffered a concussion and had to be given medical attention.
