The Austrian delegation no longer voted against the electoral manifesto of the European People’s Party, which calls for Romania’s accession to the Schengen area as soon as possible, so that the manifesto was adopted unanimously, PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan announced on Wednesday.

The electoral manifesto includes the following paragraph:

“We need full admission to the Schengen area for Bulgaria and Romania, eliminating not only air and sea controls, but also land border controls as soon as possible.”

“This vote shows that the deadlock has been overcome and that, even if there were difficulties, we will overcome them and obtain Romania’s full accession to the Schengen area”, said Mureșan, in a press release.

Before this vote, General Secretary Christian Stocker stated that ÖVP delegates would not agree to the EPP manifesto citing several red lines, such as the necessary approval for nuclear energy or the expansion of the Schengen area, as reported by the Austrian publication Kurier.

Thus, the ÖVP would have rejected the full accession of their countries to the Schengen area, requested by Romania and Bulgaria: “The Schengen system is broken. We need to fix the system, not sweeten it,” Stocker said in a statement.
