Briscoe Makes History with Brickyard 400 Pole Win
Chase Briscoe etched his name into NASCAR history Saturday, becoming the frist driver to secure pole positions at all three major crown jewel races – the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, and now the Brickyard 400 - within a single season. His blistering lap of 183.165 mph around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway propelled him to the top starting spot.
This achievement places Briscoe in a unique position, with a chance to complete a historic sweep at the Southern 500 later this August. He’s already amassed nine career poles, with five coming this season alone.
Wallace Qualifies Second, Toyota Dominates Top Spots
Bubba Wallace will start alongside Briscoe on the front row, posting a strong lap of 183.117 mph. Remarkably, qualifying saw a dominant performance from Toyota, with five of their drivers securing the top five starting positions. This marks the first time the manufacturer has achieved such a feat.
Qualifying unfolded after a brief, rescheduled practice session, necessitated by Friday’s rainout.
Championship Contenders Emerge
Ty gibbs, Briscoe’s teammate, currently holds the early advantage in the championship round of NASCAR’s inaugural In-Season Challenge. He qualified fifth with a speed of 182.445 mph. The ultimate prize? A $1 million championship and the title of In-Season Challenge champion.
Ty Dillon will start 26th as he also competes for the championship.
Hamlin Faces Uphill Battle After Qualifying Crash
Denny Hamlin, last week’s race winner, faces a notable challenge in his pursuit of a first Brickyard 400 victory. A hard crash during qualifying relegated him to the back of the field, starting 39th.
Despite this setback, Hamlin recently signed a two-year contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing, demonstrating the team’s continued faith in his abilities. He’s aiming to become just the fifth driver to achieve a career sweep of NASCAR’s crown jewel races.
Larson’s Defense begins from 13th
Defending Brickyard 400 champion Kyle Larson will have to fight through the field, starting 13th. While not the ideal starting position, Larson’s proven track record suggests he’s more than capable of contending for another win.
Briscoe’s Weekend Made Even Sweeter
This pole win holds added meaning for Briscoe, occurring on the same weekend as his sister’s wedding in Indiana. Despite his qualifying success, Briscoe is still seeking his first Brickyard 400 victory.
