Grace chapman Sets Sights on 2026 Season: From Perth Nationals to World Championship Ambitions
Australian cyclist Grace Chapman is gearing up for a pivotal 2026 season, balancing immediate national goals with long-term aspirations for World Championship glory. Following a prosperous 2024 that saw her contribute to a World Championship-winning team, Chapman is focused on refining her skills and targeting key races, including the Santos Tour Down Under and the upcoming World Championships.
National Championships: A Test Before the Tour
Chapman begins her competitive calendar at the Australian National Championships in Perth, participating in both the individual time trial on January 8th and the road race on January 11th. Despite being the 2023 national champion in the road race, she acknowledges the increasing competition within the Australian cycling scene.
She’s especially mindful of rising talent like Felicity Wilson-Haffenden, still competing in the under-23 category.”I was training with her before Worlds and, especially on a course like Perth, I’m afraid, I’m scared of her,” Chapman admitted, highlighting Wilson-Haffenden’s potential. However, she maintains a focused approach: “At a time trial, you just do your race.”
chapman understands the importance of every race, stating, “Every race you do you’ve got to race for something.” She plans to use the Perth races to “set the legs up for the season” and ”test some different tactics” before moving on to bigger challenges.
Tour Down Under: A New Era of Competition
Following the national championships, Chapman will head to the Santos Tour Down Under (January 17-19). She missed the event in 2025 to prioritize later season goals, but is eager to return this year.
This edition promises to be the most competitive yet,as it will feature a full roster of Women’s WorldTour teams for the first time. Chapman’s team is strong, and she anticipates a dynamic race.
“We have a really, really strong team, so I think it’ll be a matter of playing to basically whoever’s legs show up,” she explained. She also acknowledges the growing international presence, noting, “The Europeans are always prepared for the Tour Down Under now, it’s no longer just an Aussie game.” The team’s ultimate goal is to secure the General Classification (GC) win.
World Championships: A Long-Term Focus
Beyond the Australian summer of cycling, Chapman has her sights firmly set on the 2026 World Championships. She narrowly missed a podium finish in the individual time trial at the 2024 World Championships, fueling her determination for next year.
The 2026 course is expected to favor her strengths. “Next year’s Worlds are a really big goal with the Australian cycling team. It’s a really long time trial, wich will suit me. The less variation in my watts, the better,” she said with a laugh.
Chapman will also be looking to capitalize on any other longer time trials throughout the season. She’ll continue her role supporting teammate Longo Borghini in her defense of the Giro title.
The Drive to Win
Ultimately, Chapman’s motivation extends beyond strategic goals and team support. “I’d like to win a race again,” she stated, emphasizing the unique satisfaction of crossing the finish line first. While she clearly enjoys the sport, the thrill of victory remains a powerful driving force.
