Brunei Marks Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s 80th Birthday with State Celebrations
Brunei celebrated the 80th birthday of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah with a series of grand ceremonial events held this week in the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan. The festivities included a formal parade and a royal banquet at Istana Nurul Iman, drawing state dignitaries, grassroots leaders, and distinguished guests from across society.
Ceremonial Honors and Royal Traditions
The ceremonial parade featured an inspection by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah of personnel from the Royal Brunei Land Force, Royal Brunei Navy, Royal Brunei Air Force, and the Royal Brunei Police Force, alongside members of various uniformed government departments and associations. Following the parade, the celebrations transitioned to the Istana Nurul Iman, where the Sultan conferred state honors and decorations in recognition of distinguished service and contributions to the nation.
The annual royal birthday banquet at Istana Nurul Iman remains a highly anticipated occasion. The banquet, held on the evening of Thursday, July 16, provided invited guests with an opportunity to express their appreciation for the monarch’s leadership. For many attendees, the invitation was described as a meaningful honor. Brandon Tay, an attendee at the banquet, stated, I am truly grateful to be part of His Majesty’s 80th birthday celebration. This invitation is especially meaningful to me because attending His Majesty’s birthday banquet has been a cherished family tradition.
Tay noted that he had been fortunate to attend the event with his grandparents in previous years.
Diplomatic Engagement and Regional Ties
The milestone birthday served as a focal point for international diplomacy. Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited Brunei from July 14 to 17 to represent the Singapore Government. In a statement released on July 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Singapore reported that SM Lee conveyed birthday greetings from Singapore’s leaders during an audience with the Sultan on July 15. SM Lee expressed appreciation for the Sultan’s longstanding and strong support for the enduring special relationship between the two countries.

The visit highlighted the deep-rooted cooperation between the two nations. Both sides are set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of defense ties in 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027. This agreement allows the currencies of Brunei and Singapore to be used interchangeably in both countries. During his visit, SM Lee also held an audience with Brunei Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. The two discussed methods to further strengthen people-to-people ties among the next generation of leaders, officials, and youth, specifically through the Young Leaders’ Programme, which is co-chaired by the Crown Prince.
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also offered formal congratulations in a letter, stating that the Sultan has adroitly steered
Brunei through exceptional challenges since its independence in 1984. Mr. Wong remarked, That Bruneians from all walks of life enjoy peace, harmony, and prosperity today is truly a testament to Your Majesty’s distinguished stewardship.
He further noted that the strong bilateral defense and monetary cooperation remain a cornerstone of our robust relationship.
Reflections on a Historic Reign
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was born on July 15, 1946, in Bandar Brunei—now known as Bandar Seri Begawan—and was proclaimed the 29th Sultan of Brunei in 1967. Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, he became the world’s longest-reigning monarch still on the throne.
Regional neighbors also extended their well-wishes. In Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his congratulations to the Sultan on behalf of the Malaysian Government and the people. In a Facebook post, Anwar expressed his hope that His Majesty would continue to rule Brunei Darussalam with wisdom and prudence, adding, May the ties and cooperation between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam continue to be strengthened for the benefit of both countries and their people, Insya-Allah.
Reflecting on the Sultan’s legacy, Mr. Lee’s letter noted that the birthday was a historic milestone.
He recalled that his father cherished his ties with the Seri Begawan. As the nation looks toward the future, the events in Bandar Seri Begawan served as a public affirmation of the Sultan’s leadership, with guests like Brandon Tay highlighting the monarch’s long-standing dedication to the people of Brunei.
