The collision occurred, he said, due to improper operation by the crew of the ship named Lianghui 688. Photos published by CCTV showed the red and white ship caught at a diagonal angle between two bridge pillars as water poured out of the pipes. which was cut off to her deck.

Footage also showed rescue workers in orange jumpsuits racing a boat across a murky waterway toward a high bridge with a gaping gap in the middle. Meanwhile, another patrol ship turned on its lights as it circled the area where the collapse occurred, although the cargo ship appeared to have been towed.

CCTV reported that dozens of rescuers were sent to the scene, including reinforcements from a nearby technology center in Shenzhen. Two other people were rescued and taken to hospital where they remain in stable condition.
