Carter Hart experienced a poignant return to Philadelphia on Thursday, serving as the backup goaltender during the Vegas Golden Knights‘ 3-2 overtime victory against his former team, the Flyers.This marked his first game back in the city where he spent six seasons (2018-2024) before navigating a complex off-season adn joining Vegas.

However, coach Bruce Cassidy opted to give Akira Schmid the net against Philadelphia, with Hart slated to return as the starter Saturday in Columbus to conclude the Golden Knights’ road trip.

Schmid delivered a strong performance,stopping 17 shots in the win,after previously recording a shutout against the New Jersey Devils last Friday.Cassidy explained the decision stemmed from a desire to balance Hart’s appearances – aiming for two starts in three games – and to reward Schmid following his notable shutout.
“Carter wants to play every game, he’s a very competitive guy,” Cassidy stated. “We discussed coming out, you’d play two out of three this week, and coming out of the Ranger game, he wanted to get right back in the net. So that led to a decision on Long Island.”
Hart’s Performance Since Reinstatement
Since his reinstatement by the NHL on December 1st, Hart has demonstrated solid play, posting a 2-0-1 record with a save percentage of .889 (72 saves on 81 shots). Notably, all three of his games have required overtime, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure.
A Challenging Off-Season & fresh Start
The past year presented important challenges for Hart, stemming from allegations related to the 2018 World Junior Championship. He faced a charge of sexual assault, but was ultimately acquitted in a trial this summer after a judge determined prosecutors hadn’t met the burden of proof.
Following a leave of absence from the Flyers, Hart joined the Golden Knights on a professional tryout in October, facilitated by the NHL’s reinstatement process. He later signed a two-year, $4 million contract with Vegas, seeking a fresh start.
