unlock New Insights into Health IT: New Datasets Now Available from ONC
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health information Technology (ONC) is committed to fostering innovation and transparency in the rapidly evolving health IT landscape. To that end, we’re excited to announce the release of two important new datasets designed to empower researchers, developers, and healthcare stakeholders with valuable information. these resources build upon our ongoing efforts to understand and improve the digital health ecosystem, and we believe they will spark new discoveries and drive positive change.
understanding Hospital Network Participation: A Thorough Dataset (2022-2024)
For years, the AHA (American Hospital Association) Annual Survey of US hospitals, supplemented with dedicated Information Technology questions, has provided a crucial snapshot of hospital IT adoption. We’ve now compiled and made publicly available a new dataset consolidating hospital responses related to participation in vital health information networks from 2022-2024. This dataset represents the most recent reporting from over 3,000 non-federal acute care hospitals. What’s included?
This dataset details hospital involvement in:
Regional, State, and Local Health Information Exchange Organizations (HIEs): Understanding the connectivity within communities. National Networks: Mapping participation in broader interoperability initiatives.
EHR Vendor networks: Analyzing the role of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in data exchange.
Qualified Health Information Networks® (QHINs): Tracking adoption of the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement™ (TEFCA) – a critical step towards nationwide interoperability.

Vital Considerations: This is pooled survey data, not a complete census of all hospitals. Thus, users should be mindful of potential non-response bias when drawing broad conclusions. We encourage linking this data with the broader AHA Healthcare IT Database (available thru https://www.ahadata.com/aha-healthcare-it-database) to gain a more holistic view of hospital IT capabilities, including AI adoption, information blocking practices, and HIE partnerships. Moreover, combining this data with our PI Program dataset can unlock even deeper insights.
Exploring the Digital Health App Marketplace: A Longitudinal View (2019-2025)
The explosion of digital health apps presents both astounding opportunities and complex challenges. Since 2019, ONC’s ASTP (American Society for Testing and Materials) team has been meticulously studying public-facing app marketplaces hosted by EHR companies and innovative organizations. Our initial research, published in PMC (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8510286/), established a baseline understanding of the growing ecosystem of applications integrating with EHRs.
Now, we’re releasing a comprehensive dataset covering apps and software applications discovered through these sources from 2019-2025. this “snapshot” provides a detailed look at the evolving landscape of digital health innovation.
What’s in the dataset?
Application Name: identifying the specific app.
Developer Name: Knowing the company behind the innovation.* application Description: Understanding the app’s functionality and intended use.
Access the Dataset: https://www.healthit.gov/data/datasets/app-marketplace-tech-ecosystem
This data has already informed our ongoing research, including studies on digital health company experiences with APIs (https://academic.oup.com/jamia/article/31/4/866/7590608). We believe making it publicly available will accelerate innovation and help address critical challenges in healthcare. We’ve even tracked the emergence of groundbreaking technologies like the first ambient scribe through this project.Data-Driven Insights for a Healthier Future
