China publishes world’s first high-definition geological atlas of the moon

Beijing, Bolong.id – China released a set of geological atlases moon global at a scale of 1:2.5 million, which is an atlas geology the world’s first complete High Definition (HD) quality, providing basic map data for future lunar research and exploration.

Reporting from 光明日报 Sunday (21/04/24), this collection of geological atlases, available in Chinese and English, includes the Lunar Globe Geological Atlas and the Lunar Geological Atlas Quadrangle Map, according to the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

“The lunar geological atlas is essential for studying lunar evolution, selecting locations for future lunar research stations, and exploiting lunar resources. “This atlas can also help us better understand Earth and other planets in the solar system, such as Mars,” said Ouyang Ziyuan, CAS academician and renowned lunar scientist.

“The world has witnessed significant advances in the field of lunar exploration and scientific research over the past few decades, which have increased our understanding of the moon. However, geological maps of the moon published during the Apollo era have not been changed for about half a year. A century old, and still used for lunar geological research.

“With advances in the study of lunar geology, these old maps can no longer meet the needs of future scientific research and lunar exploration,” said Liu Jianzhong, senior researcher from the Institute of Moon Geochemistry, CAS.
