Major Rail Disruptions Expected in North Rhine-Westphalia Due to Extensive Renovations
Passengers traveling between Cologne, Wuppertal, and Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) should prepare for significant travel disruptions beginning January 30th, culminating in a five-month railway closure starting february 6th and lasting until July 10th. Deutsche Bahn (DB) is undertaking extensive renovations to modernize a crucial transport corridor, impacting both local and long-distance rail services.
The project, aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of the heavily used Cologne-Wuppertal-Hagen railway line, will involve the replacement of approximately 80 kilometers of track, renewal of 28 switches, and modernization of nearly 30 kilometers of overhead line equipment. Additionally, four kilometers of new noise protection barriers will be constructed, and twelve stations will be modernized to enhance accessibility and platform quality.
Impact on Passengers
Travelers can anticipate widespread changes to their regular routes. During the complete closure, regional express (RE) and S-Bahn lines – including RE4, RE7, RE13, RE49, RB48, and S-Bahn lines S7, S8, S9, S28, and S68 – will be either diverted or replaced with bus services. Many trains will not operate along the affected section, with DB providing a combination of express buses and interim stops.
Long-distance services will also face considerable disruption. Trains between Cologne and Dortmund will be rerouted via Düsseldorf and Essen, extending travel times and bypassing Wuppertal.ICE services between Cologne and Berlin will be diverted through Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, and Bochum, adding 20 to 30 minutes to the journey. international and cross-regional IC train connections will also be affected, with services operating in segmented routes.
Prior to the full closure, passengers in Cologne should expect timetable changes, including potential cancellations and diversions on S-Bahn lines near Cologne-Messe/Deutz and Cologne-Trimbornstraße, starting January 30th.
