President Colombia Gustavo Petro broke off diplomatic relations with Israel on Thursday (2/5).

The Colombian government has indeed planned to sever its relations with Israel after seeing the relentless brutal actions in the Gaza Strip in recent times.

Then, Petro will officially cut off his country’s diplomatic relations with Israel unilaterally.

“Tomorrow (Thursday) diplomatic relations with the state of Israel will be cut off… because it has a government, because it has a president who is committing genocide,” Petro said on Wednesday (1/5), as quoted AFP.

Israel had previously ‘stopped security exports’ to Colombia after Petro said the behavior of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant was similar to that of the Nazi government that once ruled Germany.

Seeing this, Israel responded by accusing Petro of “expressing support for atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists, inciting anti-Semitism.”

Gallant also summoned the Colombian ambassador for further questioning about this matter. Suddenly, Bogota responded by expelling the Israeli diplomatic envoy in Colombia.

Colombia and Israel previously had strong diplomatic and military ties. However, Israel’s ruthless behavior sparked anger in Bogota, leading to the official severing of long-standing ties.

This is a firm step from Colombia towards Israel, which continues to make various efforts to justify its actions as a basis for ‘self-defense’ from Hamas.
