CONNECTIVITY – Starlink obtains its license

Starlink can now market its products in Madagascar. In a decision by the Communication Technologies Regulatory Agency (Artec), it is indicated that this company now has a license “For the installation and operation of broadband internet service by satellite”. It is allocated to Starlink Madagascar SA, which thus becomes a telecom operator in its own right, able to operate throughout the national territory. It is also specified that this license is valid for five years, from the signing of this document.

Artec nevertheless indicates in its decision that Starlink will have to pay 100,000 euros in return for the award of this license. “The holder [de la licence, NDLR] will pay an annual fee of 5% of its turnover excluding tax, payable in ariary to Artec at the official rate in force on the day of payment”, it is announced.

Tahina Razafindramalo, Minister of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications, recently announced the official arrival of Starlink and the company’s acquisition of a license. In a post on his LinkedIn account, the government member welcomed this subsidiary of SpaceX, speaking of a new chapter and a new player which is part of the connectivity landscape on the Big Island.

This company will thus be able to establish and operate a public satellite network of the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) type, but also a public satellite telecommunications network of the VSAT type. Recently, Starlink was domiciled in Madagascar in the form of a limited company with a general administrator with a capital of 22.5 million ariary.
