Technological innovation is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Startup in England created an Invisibility Shield which makes the user invisible.

Two years ago, a fundraiser emerged to create an invisible shield. Now the shield appears in the latest version 2.0.

A UK startup called Invisibility Shield Co. makes a shield that can fool the eye and is about as flat as a piece of cardboard. This shield can also turn anything behind it invisible, by bending the light around it.

Reported by detikINET from Futurism, Thursday (2/5/2024) Invisibility Shield is ready to continue its polycarbonate shield project with the 2.0 model, which comes in a larger size. The largest version is 1.8 meters tall, large enough to hide several people standing side by side.

It’s possible that this is the closest thing to an invisibility cloak ala Harry Potter which you will get in real life. Like a dream come true.

Light Tricks

This tool takes advantage of several properties of light, such as bending light from the background towards the person looking at it. Light hitting an object or person hiding behind the Invisibility Shield is deflected away from the person in front of it, making it effective at hiding them.

Shield This will not completely deceive the eye. Even the second version of the company’s shield is far from perfect and requires a simple backdrop like a brick wall or beach to really work.

People hiding behind shields would also need to stick their heads out to see things, as their sight would also be rendered invisible.

Used to play paintball

People have found creative ways to use the first generation Invisibility Shield, from hiding at paintball games, to stage magic props, to observing wildlife, and even being used to hide attendees at Korean dating events.

Version 2.0 starts selling from US$ 66 or around 1 million rupiah for a mini shield measuring around 30×20 cm. The large megashield can hide several people, selling for less than US$ 1,000 or 16 million rupiah on Kickstarter.

Currently, the company has raised US$ 182,500 or less than 3 billion rupiah, far exceeding its initial goal of US$ 11,600 or 188 million rupiah.

In conclusion, this is a fun optical illusion but will not provide ‘Predator’ movie-style benefits to the military on the battlefield. However, for photographing rare birds or playing hide and seek, this shield might be useful.
