In 1999, Flanders became acquainted with several Ghent police officers. Flikken immediately became a hit: hundreds of thousands of viewers followed the fortunes of Tony, Britt, Ben, Selattin, Wilfried and Raymond every week and it didn’t take long before Ghent organized a real Flikken day. The actors like to look back on that golden period in which the series was filmed. A period in which they became good friends with the real cops is evident in the Play4 podcast Behind the Scenes.

The cast of Flikken could always count on their ‘colleagues’ when they needed help, it sounds. Not only did they keep an eye on things, but they also suggested calling them if the actors were in the pub and had looked too deeply into the glass. “We were allowed to call them day and night,” says Axel Daeseleire. “I was once glad they were there to take me to the next café.” But the recordings of Flikken also had their disadvantages, especially for Axel, who played motorcycle rider Ben Vanneste and had to drive the motorcycle. “I have been hit on my private parts more than once,” he continues.
