World Cup 2026 Hosting in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Threatened Over Funding Dispute
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 11th to July 19th across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, is facing a potential snag in Foxborough, Massachusetts.A dispute over funding for security and services is threatening to prevent the Gillette Stadium – home of the New England Patriots (NFL) – from hosting its scheduled seven matches, including a crucial Group Stage match between France and Norway on June 26th.
The Gillette stadium is slated to host several other first-round matches, including Haiti vs. scotland on june 13th, Norway’s opening match against either Iraq, Bolivia, or Suriname on June 16th, Scotland vs. Morocco on June 19th, and England vs. ghana on June 23rd.It is also scheduled to host a Round of 16 match featuring the winner of Group E (containing Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast) and a subsequent quarter-final.
However, Foxborough town officials have issued an ultimatum to FIFA, demanding financial assistance to cover the costs associated with hosting the event. Town Manager Paige Duncan stated, as reported by ESPN, “If nobody comes up with money, there will be no World Cup in Foxborough.” She informed FIFA that without a “satisfactory resolution” to the funding issue, the town cannot accommodate the seven scheduled matches.
While the U.S. federal government has pledged $625 million to the eleven host cities to bolster security and preparedness, the specific amount allocated to Foxborough remains undisclosed. The town, with a population of approximately 18,000,is unwilling to use local public funds to cover the expenses. Duncan has requested $8 million to finance police services within the town and around the stadium.
The Gillette Stadium is owned by the New England Patriots, but the town of Foxborough owns the land on wich it sits and provides an annual operating permit to the NFL franchise. This permit has not yet been granted to FIFA for the World Cup matches. Foxborough has set a deadline of March 17th for a resolution to the funding dispute.
