Cynthia Erivo Stepped Aside to Empower a New Generation of ‘Wicked‘ Stars
If your still basking in the magic of the ”Wicked” movie franchise, you might want to hold onto that feeling. The incredibly talented Cynthia Erivo won’t be reprising her role as Elphaba anytime soon – not even on Broadway.
But before you’re disheartened, understand her reasoning is both legitimate adn remarkably selfless. During a recent appearance on “The View,” Erivo explained her decision stemmed from a desire to open doors for other actresses.
She felt it would be “a little selfish” to continue in the role, especially with the film version now widely available. Everyone can experience her portrayal of Elphaba in thier own homes and in theaters.
Consequently, Erivo believes the film creates space for other women to take on the iconic role on Broadway. And she’s proven right.
Her stepping aside has directly paved the way for Lencia Kebede, who has made history as the first Black actress to play Elphaba full-time on Broadway. Kebede debuted in march and is captivating audiences at the Gershwin Theater, where “Wicked” has thrilled viewers since 2003.
Reflecting on landing the monumental role, Kebede shared with Parade in October 2024: “I was in such shock…for this childhood dream of being on Broadway to come through just like, in front of my eyes, in that moment. It was just like me seeing my childhood self being like ‘you were right, bro.You did it!’ It was an out of body experience.”
Kebede’s journey is inspiring.A 2016 graduate of Occidental College with degrees in diplomacy & world affairs and politics, she initially planned a career in those fields. Fortunately for theatre lovers, she discovered her true calling on stage.
