A Nod to Racing Royalty: Driver Honors Earnhardt with Unique Paint Scheme
A young racer from Harford County, Maryland, is turning heads – and honoring a legend – with a bold move on the CARS Tour circuit. Twenty-seven-year-old Connor Barnes, driving for Lee Pulliam Performance, recently took to the track in a racecar sporting a striking paint scheme inspired by the iconic Dale Earnhardt. But this wasn’t just any tribute; it blended Earnhardt’s classic look with a playful twist.
Barnes’ connection to “The Intimidator” isn’t rooted in childhood memories of watching races. Instead, his fandom blossomed through collecting diecast cars. “I don’t no if it was the diecasts that turned me on to them, but I coudl tell you all of Dale Earnhardt’s paint schemes,” barnes explained. He also grew up admiring Dale Earnhardt Jr., further solidifying his appreciation for the Earnhardt racing legacy.
A Scheme Born of Passion (and a Little Risk)
The idea to run an Earnhardt-themed car wasn’t born from a formal agreement or licensing deal. It stemmed from a genuine desire to pay respect. Barnes admits he wasn’t entirely sure about the “rules” surrounding replicating a legendary paint scheme.”Sometimes it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission,” he chuckled. He took a calculated risk, initiating the wrap before seeking approval. Fortunately, his gamble paid off.
Barnes proactively sent photos of the nearly-completed car to Dale Earnhardt Jr. himself. Jr.’s enthusiastic response – “he said it looked cool” - provided the validation he needed. He had seen similar tributes in the past and felt confident he wasn’t overstepping boundaries.Ultimately, the reception was overwhelmingly positive, and he hopes it served as a fitting tribute to both Earnhardt Sr. and Jr.
On-Track Success and a Lasting Keepsake
The unique paint scheme didn’t just look good; it seemed to bring good luck. Barnes secured a fifth-place finish, marking his third top-five result of the year in the CARS Tour. He’s consistently performing at a high level, boasting seven top-10 finishes in ten races.
This particular car won’t meet the fate of being disassembled into collectible pieces. Instead, Barnes plans a more personal tribute. He intends to remove the driver’s side door, have it signed by his dedicated team and crew, and then proudly display it in his Florida garage.
This gesture underscores the deep respect and camaraderie within his racing team. It’s a tangible reminder of a triumphant race and a heartfelt homage to a racing dynasty. For Barnes, it’s about more than just speed; it’s about honoring the legends who paved the way.
