Danielle Spencer,teh actress who charmed audiences as Dee on the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom “What’s Happening!!,” has passed away. Her journey, marked by both early fame and notable health challenges, exemplified resilience and a commitment to helping others. She was 67.
Spencer’s portrayal of the sharp-tongued, perpetually unimpressed Dee resonated with a generation, making her a television icon. “What’s Happening!!,” set in Los Angeles’ Watts neighborhood, was a pioneering show for its focus on the lives of Black teenagers. It quickly gained a devoted following thanks to its relatable characters – Raj, Dwayne, Rerun, and of course, Dee.
A life Interrupted, A Spirit Unbroken
early in the show’s run, Spencer faced a life-altering tragedy. In 1977, a car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu left her in a coma for three weeks and tragically claimed the life of her stepfather. Consequently, she endured years of subsequent spinal and neurological complications, requiring multiple surgeries.
Despite these immense obstacles, Spencer refused to be defined by her injuries. She demonstrated remarkable strength and determination throughout her life. She openly discussed the challenges she faced, inspiring many with her unwavering spirit.
From Bronx Roots to Hollywood spotlight
Born in Trenton, New jersey, and raised in New York City, Spencer began acting around the age of nine. “What’s Happening!!” marked her first credited role,catapulting her into the national spotlight. She reflected on the experiance in a 2014 interview with Jet magazine, noting the lack of representation for young Black girls in media at the time.
This lack of a blueprint made navigating her newfound fame all the more challenging, but she embraced the opportunity with courage. You can imagine being thrust into such a position with no prior examples to follow.
Beyond the Screen: A Passion for Animals
Spencer’s ambition extended far beyond acting. She pursued higher education, ultimately earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee University in 1993. She attended both the University of California, Davis, and UCLA during her studies.Following her graduation, she dedicated her career to animal welfare.She became a practicing veterinarian and a passionate advocate for animal rights. Her commitment to healing extended beyond humans, showcasing a deep empathy and compassion.
She even returned to the screen briefly, appearing as a veterinarian in the 1997 film “As Good as it Gets” alongside Jack Nicholson.
A Legacy of strength and Compassion
Spencer continued to face health battles in her later years. She underwent emergency surgery in 2018 for a hematoma stemming from her 1977 accident, and received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2014, leading to a double mastectomy. Yet, she persevered, embodying the spirit of a true “warrior,” as described by her former co-star Haywood Nelson.Nelson,who played dwayne on “What’s Happening!!,” affectionately remembered Spencer as a “brilliant,loving,positive,pragmatic warrior” and a “Shero.” His tribute encapsulates the profound impact she had on those who knew her.Danielle Spencer is survived by her brother,musician Jeremy pelt,and her mother,Cheryl Pelt. Her life serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity,it’s possible to pursue your passions and make a meaningful difference in the world.
