David Lynch Honored with Moving Tribute at Locarno Film Festival
The Locarno Film Festival recently unveiled a poignant adn surprising tribute to the celebrated filmmaker David Lynch, preceding the premiere of its 2025 opening film. Artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro introduced the homage with heartfelt words, acknowledging a creative visionary who profoundly impacted cinema. He described Lynch as someone who deeply resonated with audiences, leaving an enduring legacy of beauty, dreams, and artistic innovation.
nazzaro announced the party would feature a “tiny, marvelous masterpiece” titled An Unfinished Room…, without explicitly naming the honoree beforehand. The anticipation in Locarno’s Piazza Grande was palpable as the film began to play on the large screen.
An Unfinished Room… offered a compelling glimpse into lynch’s artistic process and career. It featured the director himself discussing his work in painting and filmmaking, alongside iconic scenes from his beloved films. These included Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and the experimental What Did Jack Do?
Furthermore, the film showcased footage of Lynch engaged in his passions – painting and composing music. The editing was skillfully handled by Duwayne Dunham,with creative producer credits also going to S.E. Feinberg and David Negron.
A wave of excited applause erupted from the Locarno audience as the familiar Twin Peaks theme music filled the square. The screen then displayed the words “David Lynch 1946-2025,” prompting a deeply emotional response from those in attendance.
Interestingly, Dunham was also at Locarno to premiere his own film, Legend of the Happy Worker. This fable for our time stars Josh Whitehouse, Thomas Haden Church, and Colm Meaney, and screened out of competition. The festival’s opening night included footage of Dunham and his cast and crew arriving and walking the red carpet, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
