Global Initiative to Equip 120 Million Workers with AI Skills Gains Momentum
January 23, 2026 – The World Economic Forum (WEF) today announced significant global commitments to invest in workforce growth, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). The “reskilling Revolution” initiative is on track to reach over 850 million individuals worldwide, moving closer to its goal of providing one billion people with improved access to skills, education, and economic opportunities.
As AI, geopolitical shifts, and the energy transition rapidly reshape global labor markets, preparing workers for the future economy has become a pressing global priority. the WEF emphasizes that the future of work is not predetermined and will be shaped by access to learning, support for job transitions, and encouragement of entrepreneurship.
A core component of this initiative involves ample commitments from the private sector. Over 25 technology companies have pledged to support 120 million workers with access to AI tools, skills training programs, and career pathways. This commitment reflects a growing recognition of the need to proactively address the skills gap created by the increasing integration of AI across industries.
Beyond corporate pledges, India and Jordan have launched new national skills and education accelerators, expanding training and educational opportunities for an additional 14.8 million people. These accelerators aim to rethink customary pathways into the workforce, facilitate smoother career transitions, and ensure ongoing employability in an AI-driven economy.
“The global economy is undergoing the moast significant transformation in decades,” stated Saadia Zahidi, Managing director of the World Economic Forum. “However, the future of work is not set in stone. It will be defined by learning opportunities, support for career transitions, and fostering entrepreneurship. Today’s announcements demonstrate decisive action, mobilizing educational institutions, employers, and governments to ensure the future of work offers opportunities for all.”
This initiative underscores the critical need for collaborative efforts to navigate the evolving landscape of work and ensure that individuals are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in the age of AI. The focus on reskilling and upskilling represents a proactive approach to mitigating potential job displacement and maximizing the benefits of technological advancements for a broader segment of the population.
