The defamation case against French-Polish director Roman Polanski starts in the Paris court on Tuesday. The filmmaker, who denies the charges, is not present, according to French media.

Ninety-year-old Polanski is accused of defamation following statements in an interview with a French magazine in 2019. The director responded to the accusations of abuse of British actress Charlotte Lewis. Polanski called her a liar, among other things.

In the interview, the director also cited an interview of Lewis from 1991. In it, the actress said that she wanted to be his “mistress”.

Lewis had already said in 2010 that many of her quotes from that interview were incorrect. She sued Polanski for defamation after the interview in 2019.

Polanski has been accused of sexual misconduct by several women. The director of films like Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown in The Pianist was convicted in the United States in 1977 for having sex with a thirteen-year-old girl. Since then he has lived in Europe, because he would be arrested immediately in the US.

In 2018, Polanski was removed from the Oscar Academy, the jury that determines which films and makers receive an Oscar.
