“As a delegation, we met with German President Steinmeier upon the invitation of the German President. He is the former Minister of Internal Affairs. Generally speaking, it was an extremely productive, sincere and friendly meeting. Many issues between Turkey and Germany, many issues related to our region I can say that it was a very productive meeting in general.
The main issues in the relations between the two countries were discussed, but the German President first started by congratulating our Chairman Özgür Özel for his election success. After the election, there is a great interest in the CHP abroad and an increase in information. We determine this very clearly. Many countries, embassies, presidents, prime ministers and political party leaders are almost lining up to congratulate our President, and meeting requests are coming.
Therefore, the German President started by congratulating us. They said that they were following Turkey very closely, and we were even a little surprised to see that the German President conveyed to us some of the data that we planned to give them. There is a refugee issue in bilateral relations, we discussed this in detail. There is the Palestine issue, and we all know the sensitivity of Germans on this issue. Despite this, our Chairman spoke very clearly on this issue at the congress of the German Social Democratic Party in Berlin; Even though the Germans didn’t like it very much, he mentioned it. He expressed the problems in Gaza. Again, these issues came to the agenda during the meeting with the German President, and he clearly expressed Turkey’s and CHP’s stance on this issue.
“WE EXPRESSED THE GRIEVANCE ON THE VISA ISSUE”
The visa issue was very important. Many European Union countries, especially Germany, have been causing difficulties to the citizens of the Republic of Turkey for a long time. Our citizens suffer greatly in this regard. We, as both the main opposition party and the party that came first in the elections, expressed our sensitivity on this issue. We already share with the public that we are ready to do everything we can. Our Chairman clearly explained the problem here to the German President. ‘Waiting times are too long, rejection rates are too high.’ This is not true. Many of our citizens, some of them, are not in the category that Germans can complain about. There are also business people, artists, scientists, people who will go to the congress, people who have been to Germany many times, young people, and some students. These are not people who would apply for potential reactionism. Rejections are coming to these too.
Our Chairman listed them one by one and asked the German President to take the initiative on this issue. There is a European Football Championship in Germany in June. The Turkish national team will participate in the championship and even applications on this subject have already been rejected. It became clear that there would be a problem even for the citizens of the Republic of Turkey and football fans to go to Germany and follow Turkey’s national matches. “The Chairman has already called on the German President to take the initiative to prevent any problems even for those who will go to this football match with the German President.”
Uzgel also said the following about Steinmeier’s approach and answers in the meeting:
“He was very positive. He was also very open. He answered in a sincere manner. He was curious about regional developments and internal developments. Opinions on this issue were shared. As for the visa issue, of course they are aware of it. In fact, they also know what they are doing. Although they did not make very clear guarantees on this issue, they were able to do so. They told us they would support us as much as possible.”
