Internal Candidates and Outside Targets
The organization is considering both internal and external candidates to fill its general manager vacancy. Among the internal options are Kris Draper, the team’s director of amateur scouting and assistant GM who has led the scouting department since 2019, and Shawn Horcoff, an assistant GM who has guided operations for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the team’s minor-league affiliate. Other names linked to the vacancy include Ryan Martin, an assistant GM for the New York Rangers who previously worked in the Red Wings organization, and various front-office figures from around the league, including Kevyn Adams, Brandon Pridham, and Jason Spezza.
Yzerman Reflects on a Legacy
Reflecting on his time as general manager, Yzerman expressed gratitude for his tenure with the club. “I am sincerely grateful to Chris and the entire Ilitch family,” Yzerman said. “This organization has given me incredible opportunities, from my time as a player to the privilege of returning as general manager.”

Yzerman, whose No. 19 jersey is retired by the franchise, played 22 seasons with Detroit and served as captain before later managing the Tampa Bay Lightning to two Stanley Cup titles. “My commitment to the Red Wings and this community will never waver, and I look forward to supporting the organization in whatever role is needed to achieve our collective goals,” he added.
The Looming Larkin Trade Request
The incoming leadership faces immediate challenges, most notably the status of team captain Dylan Larkin. The 29-year-old center, who recorded 67 points in 74 games last season, requested a trade that became public on June 4. Larkin is signed to an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with five seasons remaining. Yzerman previously indicated he felt no pressure to fulfill the trade request if a suitable deal did not emerge.
Offensive Rebuilding Efforts
The front office also continues to navigate roster construction following a busy start to the summer. On July 1, the Red Wings signed 33-year-old forward Viktor Arvidsson to a two-year, $10 million contract. The move is intended to improve an offense that ranked 22nd in the NHL last season, averaging 2.91 goals per game.
A Final Word from Ownership
“Steve’s lifetime of contributions to the Red Wings has meant more to this franchise than words can truly express, and I have the highest level of respect for his continued commitment to our organization,” Ilitch said regarding the transition. “We are thankful for Steve’s hard work and dedication as general manager and are grateful knowing Steve will remain where he belongs — here with the Red Wings family.”
