“you have to find a person that agrees with, ‘yes, this is a problem for me personally, for my team, for the teams around me. I agree this would be great to solve with this product of yours,'” Nilsson explains.
The key is to empower these ”champions” to own the integration of the new tool within their domain. Spotify’s plugin architecture for Backstage exemplifies this approach. They partnered with the data platform team, allowing them to maintain their existing products within Backstage, while Spotify handled the underlying infrastructure. This arrangement provided value to the data platform team without requiring them to relinquish control or expertise.
