It was reported that 51 of the irregular migrants on board were missing after a boat leaving the coast of North Africa and heading towards the Canary Islands in the southwest of Spain sank in the Atlantic Ocean.

In the news given by the Spanish official news agency EFE, based on Canary Islands Coast Guard sources, it was announced that a boat with irregular immigrants on board sank about 110 kilometers off El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands group.

It was noted that the sinking boat in question was reported to the Coast Guard via radio in the morning by an oil tanker named “Beskidy” heading from Brazil to the Spanish port of Cartagena.

It was stated that the Spanish Coast Guard, which sent a boat and a helicopter to the region, rescued 9 irregular immigrants, more than half of whom tried to survive by holding on to a small part of the sinking boat above the water, and received information that 51 people were missing.

In their first statements to the Spanish authorities, the surviving irregular immigrants, all men, stated that they had been waiting for help with half their bodies in the sea for about two days, that they had set out with a total of 60 people and that 51 people were missing.
