What to See in Tolosa
The Puerta de Castilla (Castile Gate) is a must-see landmark. Originating as an access point to the medieval city walls, the current gate dates back to the 18th century and showcases a Neoclassical style. Originally part of the Escolapios school, it was preserved after the school’s demolition.
Another notable building is the Tinglado, known as Zerkausi in Basque. This structure, comprised of arches, hosts a weekly market with local products every Saturday. Guided tours are available, revealing the building’s history. Construction took place between 1899 and 1900.
Plaza Berria (New Square) serves as a central gathering place for Tolosa residents. Throughout its history, it has hosted diverse events, including Carnival celebrations as 1845, pelota matches, and rural sports demonstrations.
Adjacent to the Gipuzkoa General Archive stands the Church of San Francisco (St. Francis). Founded in 1587 through a donation by pedro de Mendizorrotz, it’s a significant religious site. Near the Oria River is the Convent of Santa Clara de Tolosa, a Baroque structure built between the 17th and 18th centuries. its austere exterior contrasts with a lavish interior featuring a gilded retablo demonstrating a transition from the Churrigueresque to Rococo style.
