  • Are you afraid that you will lose enough security with the new iOS 17.4 update?
  • Deactivate this function and you will avoid the risk
  • You will not be able to install apps from third-party stores

Apple released iOS 17.4 this week, which takes the European Union’s Digital Markets Directive (DMA) into account. Thanks to this, for the first time in history, you can install third-party app stores on the iPhone and use them as an alternative to the default App Store. However, it should be remembered that with this comes a potential security breach.

Alternative stores in iOS

A fundamental innovation in iOS 17.4 is the aforementioned support for third-party app stores. Android has offered this option for years. The user has the right to choose whether to choose to download the App Store, where the applications are checked by Apple itself, or to use another application store for download.

Don’t overlook

The biggest change in iOS history! Apple has revealed how it will support alternative stores

The American manufacturer, which had to submit to pressure from the European Union with this step, admits that the forced innovation increases the risk for unwary users. “With this new legislation comes an inevitable increase in privacy and security risks. Our priority remains creating the best and safest environment possible for our users in the EU and around the world.” uvedl Apple Fellow Phil Schiller.

The indisputable fact is that if the user chooses to download an application from a store other than the official App Store, he is exposed to the risk of downloading a fraudulent application or malware, because no other application stores have such strict rules for checking applications as the App Store itself.

How to disable third party stores in iOS 17.4?

If you want to ensure maximum security on your iOS 17.4 iPhone, you should definitely not risk using unverified third-party stores. This option is more suitable for very experienced users. To make sure you don’t get into any potential mess, manually disable the alternative app stores feature. How to do it?

  • On your iPhone running iOS 17.4, open Settings
  • Go to Screen Time and then Content & Privacy Restrictions
  • Select App installs and purchases
  • Under App Stores, choose disable to block the ability to download apps from third-party stores
  • Only in the European Union!

As you can probably guess, the major changes with iOS 17.4 only come to users in the European Union, because they are subject to strict EU regulations, and therefore Apple has no reason to introduce these features anywhere else. And it is precisely with this regional availability that there is at least one more interesting fact.

Apple states on its official website that users coming from the European Union will have access to alternative application stores, even if they travel outside the borders of EU countries – for example, to the USA, Asia, etc. It should be noted that Apple perceives the European Union as well as non-European territories of EU states, for example the Canary Islands, Réunion, etc.

But what happens if a European user with iOS 17.4 travels outside the EU for an extended period of time? According to the company’s official website, in such a case the user simply loses access to the new functions.

“But if you’re away for too long, you’ll lose access to some features, including installing new alternative app stores. Apps you installed from alternative app stores will continue to work, but they won’t be able to be updated from the store you downloaded them from.” explains Apple. What exactly “too long” means, but no one knows.
