Microsoft announces this in a blogpost. SLMs are the counterpart of the well-known large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-Turbo-4, Claude and Gemini. SLMs offer similar capabilities to LLMs, but are smaller in size and trained on smaller data sets.

Microsoft wants to release three SLMs in the near future, of which Phi-3 is the first. Phi-3 mini has a total of 3.8 billion parameters. Microsoft reports that the model performs better than its counterpart with twice as many parameters.

In the coming weeks, Microsoft will also make additional Phi-3 models available, specifically Phi-3-small and Phi-3-medium. Phi-3-mini is immediately available via Microsoft Azure AI Studio, machine learning platform Hugging Face and the Ollama framework. Phi-3-mini will also be available through Nvidia’s Nvidia Inference Microservices (NIM).
