The Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs recently finalized a significant trade, reshaping both teams’ rosters as we head into the 2026 season. This deal centers around right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera, who is heading to the Cubs in exchange for a promising package of young talent.Understanding the implications of this move requires a closer look at the players involved and the strategic motivations behind it.
Cabrera, now eligible for arbitration, will remain under team control through the 2028 season, providing the Cubs with a potentially valuable asset for years to come. He originally signed with the Marlins as an international amateur free agent in 2015, and while possessing a high-velocity fastball reaching 96 mph, his development was hampered by inconsistencies and a history of injuries, including recurring blisters and elbow concerns.
Edward Cabrera: A Career Trajectory
From 2021 to 2024, Cabrera accumulated a bWAR of 4.3, an OPS+ of 102, a WHIP of 1.347, and averaged 5.1 walks and 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings across 63 appearances, including 61 starts. His reliability was questioned during the Marlins’ 2023 playoff push, as he posted a high walk rate (5.96 BB/9, second-highest in MLB among qualified starters) and was ultimately sent to Triple-A, missing out on the National League Wild Card Series against the phillies.
However, 2025 marked a turning point for the Dominican Republic native. He achieved career highs in starts (26), innings pitched (137.2), strikeouts (150), walks per nine innings (3.1), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.13).Cabrera also posted a strong OPS+ of 125 and completed at least seven innings in four starts, a significant improvement from his previous four seasons. From May 4th to August 8th,he boasted the third-best ERA in the National league and fourth-best in all of Major League Baseball (2.22), trailing only National league Cy young Award winner Paul Skenes (1.60), and fellow Dominican pitchers Cristopher Sánchez (2.06) and Framber Valdez (2.18).
