This Sunday, the Egyptian National Team won the African Open Water Championship, for both sexes, in a race held on the Island of Luanda, over a 5 km course.
In the men’s category, the Egyptians led with Marwan Elamrawy, gold medalist, with a time of 1h:03min.09secs
The 29-year-old is his third gold medal in events of this kind, after winning the title in 2019, in Algeria, and in 2022, in Tunisia.
Second place went to South African Henre Louw, 22 years old, who clocked 1h:03.10, followed by his compatriot Karim Magid, 16 years old, with 1h:03min.21secs.
In this class, the Angolans were unable to finish the course. Yano Elias withdrew at the end of the first lap, complaining of pain in his shoulders (tendinitis).
Luyane Costa, on the other hand, delayed the additional 15 minutes established to finish the race, after the champion crossed the finish line, and was prevented from continuing, having been removed from the sea on a water bike.
The Pharaohs were equally strong in the women’s class with 17-year-old Lamees, who won gold with a time of 1h:05min.38secs
Lamees added his third gold medal, after his achievements in 2022, in Tunisia, and in 2023, in the Seychelles Islands.
Lamees beat South Africans Hannah Neilson, 19 years old, silver medalist (1h:05.53) and Marony Jacobs, 16 years old, who secured bronze (1h:06.03).
In this sector, the national ambassadors, the sisters Rafaela and Rhanya Santos, placed sixth and tenth, respectively, but officially ran out of time, as they finished above the 15 minutes added by the organization.
