Sales of electric cars continue to rise in Portugal and the last quarter showed this again. In the first 3 months of 2024, 5038 electric vehicles were sold. Adding the sales values of vehicles in the plug-in category, the value reached 8161 units. These are high values and with great growth.
In March, 4100 new 100% electric vehicles were registered, 938 were imported and the total was 5038 new 100% electric vehicles imported in Portugal. The only variation to decrease is the number of 100% electric vehicles imported, which was slightly below the previous month’s mark.
In the first quarter, more 100% electric vehicles were sold in Portugal in 2024 than during the entire year 2020: 10,558 100% electric vehicles. This includes models from all light and heavy categories, motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles and quadricycles. Additionally, the first quarter of 2024 was the best in the last 5 years.
In the field of electrified light vehicles, there was, in fact, a decrease in variation compared to previous months, with an increase of just 10.06%. Even so, monthly and annual quotas remain stable at around 30%, representing one in three electrified vehicles sold.
In March 2024, for the fifth consecutive month, Tesla is the best-selling brand of 100% electric passenger vehicles and in the accumulated total of 100% electric and plug-in hybrids. This brand has a considerable margin for the second place occupied by BMW, followed by Mercedes-Benz, Citroën and Volvo.
In the remaining categories of road vehicles, in 2024, Toyota maintains leadership in the light goods vehicle market, followed by Peugeot, Ford, Citroën, Maxus and Dacia. In the segment of two-wheeled vehicles – motorcycles and mopeds –, BMW regains first place in sales, closely followed by Super Soco.
Estes numbers are clear and show that the focus in Portugal continues to be on electric cars. More and more consumers are looking at these proposals as an alternative and sales represent just that. This scenario is expected to continue and even grow, strengthening this market.
