The United Nations (UN) Security Council started its session to discuss the ceasefire in Gaza by observing a moment of silence due to the Moscow attack.

A new draft resolution for a permanent and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza was put to vote at the UN Security Council.

The resolution, which called for an “immediate ceasefire” that would lead to a “permanent” ceasefire during Ramadan, was passed with all 14 other Security Council members voting yes.

The decision was the first ceasefire decision adopted by the council after four previous failures.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened to cancel his delegation’s visit to Washington if the United States did not veto the UN resolution stipulating an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. AN IMMEDIATE REACTION CAME FROM NETANYAHU

In response to the Israeli delegation’s cancellation of the visit, he stated that the USA would continue to meet with its Israeli counterparts.

Kirby said that the vote given by the United States, which abstained from the vote, did not mean a change in policy.

Stating that no change has been reported in the plans for the US-Israel talks, the White House spokesman said, “I will let the Israelis talk, whether they come or not.”

STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Öncü Keçeli said about the decision: “We see the decision of the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan and also providing humanitarian access to Gaza as a positive step.” Stating that he wants Israel to fulfill the requirements of this decision as soon as possible, Keçeli said, “We call on the international community to take a common stance against Israel in order to end the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and find a permanent solution to the Israel-Palestine issue.” he said.

Also, a statement came from Hamas. Hamas reiterated that it was ready for a hostage-prisoner exchange.

EU IS SATISFIED WITH THE CEASE CEASE DRAFT

The European Union (EU) “welcomed” the adoption of the draft resolution requesting a ceasefire.

EU Council President Charles Michel stated in his post on the X social media platform that he “appreciated” the bill adopted by the UNSC.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz, in his post on the X social media platform, evaluated the UNSC’s ceasefire decision in Gaza, which was not vetoed by the USA.

Minister Katz said, “Israel will not stop firing. We will destroy Hamas and fight until the last (Israeli) prisoner returns.” he stated.

CHINA AND RUSSIA VETOED THE US OFFER

The latest failure in the ceasefire process occurred on Friday, when China and Russia vetoed the US offer.

The dispute arose over the United States’ insistence on linking the ceasefire call with the hostage agreement and its condemnation of Hamas.

The US was expected to veto any resolution calling for a ceasefire without mentioning the hostages. However, the USA abstained from the proposal, not vetoing it for the first time.

The decision emphasizes that all parties must comply with their obligations under international law.

It states that it condemns all attacks against civilians and “all acts of terrorism” and declares that hostage-taking is illegal under international law.

The resolution also calls for “expanding humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and further efforts to protect civilians.”

It demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan in a sustainable manner that will be respected by all parties, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
