“It hasn’t rained much lately, so the water is getting a little clearer again,” says Drayer. Who cares deeply about the coral around Curaçao. Many access roads have also been damaged, as have several beaches.

Speed consultation

According to Drayer, most residents of Curaçao are angry. They now want a sustainable plan of action. So that nature can recover properly. Something really needs to be done to repair dams and drainage. “Earlier this year, beaches were also washed away.” So that plan really needs to be put in place now, so that the residents of Curaçao do not experience the same thing again in a few months.

The Prime Minister has now declared an emergency meeting, but nothing concrete has emerged yet. It is expected that more will be known about possible plans later today. Renovating beaches in particular can take a long time.

Ravage

It is not only the white beaches that are suffering, but the devastation is also great inland. This is also the case at Hofi Mango National Park, set up by Jandino Asporaat. When he heard the news, he immediately flew to the island. “What I found was a real devastation, the infrastructure of the entire park is actually gone,” said Asporaat. “The park is located in a kind of valley, between two dams, so we actually got the full force of nature. Even parts of the asphalt of the roads have been swept away.”

Not only the infrastructure is gone, many plants have also been washed away. “It is so painful what happened,” said Asporaat. He advocates better plans for water management and more tree planting. According to him, responsibility must now be taken. He also indicates that he wants to contribute to solutions himself.
