Macron defends constitutional stability as Retailleau calls for ‘rupture’ ahead of 2027 election
Paris, France – President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned against radical constitutional changes to address France’s challenges, emphasizing the importance of respecting existing institutions and the rule of law. His remarks came in response to growing calls for meaningful reforms, notably from within the right-wing opposition.
In a recent interview conducted at the Élysée Palace,Macron stated that problems facing France could be addressed “while respecting checks and balances,and indeed we must do so.” He argued against altering the Constitution, warning against giving the impression that the root of France’s difficulties lay within it’s foundational legal framework. “Sometimes rules need to be changed, therefore the state of law, but we must be very careful with the state of law because it guarantees us the possibility of living freely and together,” he affirmed.
The response from Bruno Retailleau,president of the Les Républicains (LR) party,was swift and critical. Retailleau asserted that Macron was “wrong” and that “France needs a break with the past.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he labeled the President an “advocate for an immobile France” who had “failed to reform the country” and “would want nothing to change after 2027.”
